Foo packs up lunch for Kaya and Cal
Vallen abruptly stops writing, folds up the paper, and turns to Kaya and Cal — he asks where Cordelia is
Kaya asks where Camille is. Vallen responds that they’re in their room
Kaya doesn’t know where Cordelia is, but extends an invitation to Vallen to join her and Cal
Vallen looks like he has an epiphany — in an awed voice, he says “Library” (in that Cordelia’s at the library)

Going to the Library
Kaya, Cal, and Vallen go to the library to seek out Cordelia. What they see is:
A VERY exasperated librarian
A book return pile that reaches the ceiling
ROWS and rows of bookshelves that have been emptied in Cordelia’s research rampage
A handful of people
The librarian (70 y/o human) points the gang in the direction of “the lady” (she’s in the back)
He keeps asking them if they want books (they do Not)
As the gang approaches, it gets darker and darker — candles are lit, and it feels like a Resident Evil house. Furniture and things are AKIMBO!!
There’s a hut of books near the back, and as they draw closer they can hear fevered muttering
Cordelia - in her little hut of books - hears familiar footsteps (it’s Kaya, and she knows this)
KAYA APPROACHES THE HUT LIKE SHE’S APPROACHING AN INJURED ANIMAL 😭😭😭 SHE CAN’T EVEN SEE CORDELIA YET
Cordelia kinda waves Kaya off, and her hand is the only part of her that Kaya can see atm
Kaya asks Cordelia when the last time she ate or slept, and she’s continuously waved off
Kaya tries to get Cordelia to take a sip of water, and she’s met with SILENCEEEE

Vallen pokes his head into the hut, says “‘Delia dear”. What they all see is:

Her hair ribbon is used to tie together two books that she’s set aside — her hair’s pinned back and a complete mess

Cordelia doesn’t react to Vallen calling out to her — then she hears the sound of a flame being lit. This causes her to glance over
Vallen’s got a little flicker of flame over his finger, and he’s inching it towards some books
She asks if he’s so willing to burn public property to get her out of “this hut” (he immediately goes “yes”)
Vallen asks Cordelia what she’s looking for and if it’s still Balthazar
He asks why she’s looking for information on Balthazar in Hillford’s tiny library rather than the Capital
He tells her it’s been a week
Vallen asks if even KNOWS where the mitrhil mine is
She’s sent a “servant” over to keep an eye on it
Cal tells Cordelia that she can come with them and have a lovely little lunch, OR she can fight Cal and he can carry her out of the library like a child
She says she can come back after lunch!!
Then she agrees (CAL SAYS “HOT DOG!”)
As Cordelia stands up, Cal says “it smells like cheese and despair”
Cordelia collects her tarot cards and follows the gang out

He takes one of the boxes of burgers/snacks/eggs
Camille is about to leave their room when Vallen knocks (they’re holding a shovel)
Vallen manages to talk Camille down from sneaking away to go back to their hometown to dig in the rubble
Cordelia stumbles up the stairs, asks what we’re doing
Vallen casts Prestidigitation to clean Cordelia (no longer smelly!)
Camille suggests that we eat in a nice clearing that they know of, but really it was a ploy to get to their hometown (SHOT DOWN)
Lunchtime!!
The gang finally agrees to sit at our usual table in Foo Bar!!
Camille and Vallen disagree over whether or not Camille is okay
They say that they’re okay, but not good.

Kaya saw it once in the woods and tried to chase it down (for training! a moving target frfr)
Cordelia says that she’s going back to the library. As she stands up, a man comes through the door
He appears to be a courier, and he hands some stuff to Foo
There’s a letter for us!!
Cal gets it, forgets that he can’t read 💀
It looks like it’s from the Capital, seems very formal
The letter basically tells us to check on the mines in person LMAO
We get ready to head out to the mines!!
Foo offers her some coffee, she SLAMS it

Reaching the Mines
We walk to the mines — we walk for roughly 30 mins
It’s in the direction of Lancaster, slightly closer to the coast and deeper into the woods
Cordelia is slowly waking up, but still walks into people a little
Vallen’s been pondering on the name Balthazar, and he says he might have a lead on the name itself!!
It’s been a while since he’s been in Diamond, but he remembers hearing whisperings of previous tarot users
This was roughly 2 decades ago. He asks how old she is (21)
At her response, he says that there’s a card shop he needs to take her to in the Capital
As we approach the mine, we hear voices at the mine
Group stealth time!! We succeed 😎
We reach a ledge overlooking the mine
Cordelia’s little rock man (Barry) is running into a small raised wall of earth
There is a group of warforged standing outside the mine, with two dead guards
It’s a mix of big/tanky, thin, and regular warforged
Vallen’s been checking the mine daily — this is the first time he’s seen the warforged here
A warforged pushes a cart up, and we realize one of them looks like OSIRIS
One of the smaller warforged looks over the unrefined Mithril (blue electricity discharges off of it every so often)
Whenever magic strikes an item forged from mithril, something happens. Usually the wielder is temporarily shielded from negative effects from the magic
AKA MITHRIL IS ONE OF THE FEW THINGS THAT CAN NEGATE THE EFFECTS OF MAGIC
The warforged are debating what to use the mithril for
One suggests that they use the mithril for themselves — one of the others says that they shouldn’t abandon their purpose
Some of the smaller warforged say that OSIRIS won’t necessarily need ALL the mithril
A different warforged says “die, traitor” and kills one of the dissenting warforged. One of the commanders use magic to kill another
While the party is debating whether or not warforged can actually think for themselves, Cal WALKS UP TO THEM???
Vallen catches up to him
Camille tells Kaya to flank the warforged with them, and takes Cordelia with them
Camille: Hiiiii Ozwin, we’re at the mine. There were warforged here, but we killed them, kind of. The guards stationed here are both dead, unfortunately. Can you please send more :) and can they please be a little stronger so they don’t die. Also, there is a factory in Diamond using the
Ozwin: “Great another attack, they are becoming more frequent. We will send more guards please keep an eye on it”
Ozwin: “I will send more spies to Diamond to look for it”
Camille: *Informs him of what the inside of the factory looked like*
Cordelia checks on Barry and un-trap him
As soon as he gets un-stuck, he IMMEDIATELY turns to return to Hillford
Camille shares their theory about the warforged having peoples’ souls
Vallen likes the idea, but he doesn’t know how souls might be transferred to and stored in a warforged body
Kaya adds to it and says that they might have artificial souls

Vallen asks to clarify if he said “contract” when speaking of his deal with the Raven Queen (he does!)
Kaya talks to him about potentially finding this contract to find clarity in Cal’s situation with the Raven Queen (although he didn’t sign anything)
Cal also clarifies that he can read a little bit 😊
Cordelia turns to walk back to the library
Camille says that we still have a job to do, and that they’re going to investigate the mines for any other signs of entry or clues as to what they were doing
Kaya uses Mold Earth to block her path and starts moving the wall of earth back to the group (thus moving Cordelia with it)
Investigating the Mine
As we start moving towards the mine entrance, a raven flies overhead and caws at us
Cal is like “I”m ready???” as the bird flies away
Vallen is like ready for what??
CAL SAYS HE CAN UNDERSTAND BIRDS NOW???? HE DIDN’T USED TO BEFORE
The bird told him that “You need to be careful in combat, my dear Cal. I will grant you my power when you understand how to wield it”
Camille buries the bodies of the guards before going into the mine
WE FINALLY GO INTO THE MINES (AFTER SOME BANTER)
The mines are very barren as we walk in — there are more bodies of guards
Nothing seems super special, and there are no more sounds coming from deeper in the cavern

It really looks like the warforged just took what mithril they could

The gang debates whether or not we should BLOW UP THE MINE???
Cal is pro blowing up the mine (the one who suggested it)

Returning to Hillford
It’s now early evening
Camille says that we should probably come up with a plan to guard the mine
Vallen says he can do it after everyone’s pretty reluctant
He also says he can talk to Investigator Teasley (NOT too happy about that) (also insinuates that he’s gonna bang her again HELPPP)
Vallen wanders off, Camille and Kaya sneak after him
GOOD ROLLS ALL AROUND!! THEY SUCCEED ON STEALTH
Cal drinks alone
About 30 mins go by with Cal at the bar, and a decently buff older gentleman (with salt and pepper hair) sits down next to Cal
Darker skin, latin/greek in appearance
He asks Cal if he’s “Cal Corvo” (Cal’s response: fuck off (without looking up))
HE ASKS IF HE KNOWS A TIEFLING NAMED KAYA?!!?!?!

Cal turns to him and pays attention at this point, he’s protective of her 🥺
Cal reaches for his swords, and leans towards Alexios, and tells him that he asked a question
In response, he asks if Cal’s swords are silver or steel (WEREWOLF???)
Cal takes a whiff of the old man

He takes out the paper he’s been writing on all week, scribbles something on his hand, then crosses it out

Vallen raises his hand to knock on the door, but before he doe Teasley opens her door

THE DOOR IS CRACKED OPEN THOUGH LET’S GO
Camille and Kaya debate on whether or not they should still listen in

Teasley: So you haven’t given it to him
Vallen: … No, no I have not.
T: (sighs) Vallen, what are you so scared of?
V: What if they need me more? What if they cannot function without me? They’re very capable on their own, but without me, it’s… They just go to the library, they go to their hometown, they do everything except for their job.
V: What if I die? I’ve never been scared of death before, but I’ve never been in these situations before.
Camille starts getting cold feet, and says that they shouldn’t be listening to this — they start sneaking away
Kaya decides to listen in a second longer before leaving
T: (long pause) Never been one for friendships or relationships, so what’s it matter to you?
V: (very quiet for a good 20 seconds) .. We can talk about this later.
After the personal bits, Vallen tells Teasley about the situation with the mine
Cordelia time
Cordelia is having a mental breakdown 🤩🤩🤩
She was making her way to the library, and was left to her own thoughts for a little too long
She’s throwing her cards everywhere - with no magic intent - and is SCREAMING for Mystra to come get her
Camille casts Silence around Cordelia, and writes a sign telling her “Keep going! It’s ok, I just don’t want to bother the neighbors”
Cordelia defeatedly sits on the floor
Camille picks up her cards and hands them back to her
They write on a little piece of paper asking “what happened?” — she signs back “I don’t wanna talk about it” (Camille doesn’t understand)
When the drop Silence to let her talk and asks the question again, she just shakes her head and walks away to the bar
Camille asks Kaya if they did something wrong, since this is the second time Cordelia’s just walked away from them after they asked a question (without answering it)
Kaya says that she probably just needs some rest
Returning to the bar (KAYA LORE?!?)
Cal sees Kaya re-enter, and calls her over!!
The gang gets drinks

Cordelia gets a BRIMMING cup of wine

Alexios tells Kaya that he’s been looking for her, and that Cal’s informed him that they’ve been fighting in a war

He asks her where she’s from — when she responds with “The Capital…?” he’s like 🤨
Alexios asks what her earliest memory is, and whether or not she recalls the orphanage
She does not.
He asks again, what is her earliest memory?
It was arriving to her adopted parents house
Alexios tells her that Kaya does not belong “here”. And that she never has.
He also says he hates to break it to her
HE SAYS THIS ISN’T HER KINGDOM?!?!?!?!?!?
HE SAYS THAT THESE AREN’T HER KINGDOMS??!?!??! LORE DROP
Alexios came to Hillford on the behalf of an “interested party” (himself included)
He wanted to see how she was doing — she’s grown a lot, and she’s strong
Alexios says that he finds the “Eldorian growth cycle” to be “quite interesting”
He clarifies and says that Kaya is Eldorian (from Eldoria. The current continent that we are on)
Alexios gets really somber, leans in. He tells Kaya that “your path leads to war. You know that.”
He says that war is coming (been knew)
“What will you do when you feel its breath upon your neck?” “I will turn around and face it.”
Alexios likes this answer, and stands up to leave
He pats her on the shoulder, tells her to keep up the good work
ALEXIOS PULLS OUT A KEY LIKE OURS??? HE LEAVES THROUGH THE MAGIC TELEPORTING DOOR?!?!
Cordelia and Camille are like !??!
Kaya asks Cal what happened while she was gone
He was making friends! Then his new friend had to go home :(

Kaya makes a comment on how she doesn’t remember anything before her adopted parents — Camille commiserates, saying that it’s normal not to remember one’s childhood

Cordelia says that we should have a talk and be honest about each other about who we are and our pasts
Kaya agrees, says that she’s making a valid point
Kaya says that she didn’t have the greatest time with her adopted parents, and that she was more of a “showpiece” to show that her parents are “put together” and “capable of caring for a kid”
Cordelia comments on how Kaya’s father was always a bastard
Kaya left the Capital, took care of herself in the woods, and made a friend there
That friend taught her how to fight, and everything she knows, and told her to become a mercenary
Vallen asks where her friend is now — he was “on a job” and just happened to camp near where Kaya was staying
Vallen turns the conversation to Cordelia
She spent her entire life in the University. She was one of the first students in the first class after it was built
She had a huge courseload, and as such spent very little time at home
She threw herself into books - old books - and it makes her unhappy when there’s something that she can’t find/understand
She decided to leave, and whether or not that was a good idea
When it comes to Camille’s turn, they share some surface-level information (family ran an inn, the inn was named after their dead sister)

Vallen says that they’ve been through war together, and that they can tell the party a little more
The rest of the party agrees, and the general consensus is that they won’t judge Camille, no matter what
Despite the party’s encouragement, Camille can’t say much :(
They just say that they’re a changeling (been knew — although at this point they give Cordelia a look like 🙁 before they say the changeling part) and that their first memory is of when their mother first brought them home — they had dinner with their brother, and then life happened after that
After that, Camille says that they’re not ready to share any more. The party is understanding <3 (I love friendship)

Elf from 300 years ago
He was in the Diamond military, as a part of a group of seven other soldiers
On a mission, after all his other allies died, he was captured and turned into a vampire
After being approached by the vampire god, he wreaked havoc on Oakheart
He found the bodies of his parents
He begged Lathander to kill him
The vampire god - hearing this - tried to kill him
Lathander saved his life and told him to fight the evil of the world (and that he can’t die before then)
Vallen’s parents were tieflings!! He was adopted by them
Vallen’s “vamp out” ability is one that’s had by most vampire lords, but because he doesn’t drink blood he doesn’t know much about the ability. Also, he can’t control it
Vallen hands Camille an envelope (it reads “Vallen’s Will”)
He’s never faced death before, but things are changing.
He’s protecting us because it’s his job, but it’s become more than a job — he’s grown to care for us very much
He tends to outlive a lot of people, and his past relationships haven’t ended very well
THE WILL IS JUST IN CASE THE WORST HAPPENS (ALTHOUGH HE DOESN’T PLAN ON DYING)

Vallen mentions that he doesn’t think the Orb likes him very much, but he’s tempted to experiment with it

But also The Curator might have some answers as to whether or not the Orb can be used to Vallen’s benefit (they promise to ask the next time they see him — although that might not be for a while, because the party is in for some Very Bad dreams)

Vallen visits Cordelia
Vallen delivers Cordelia’s wine, tells her that Foo asked him to give it to her
Cordelia asks Vallen how many books she read this week (OVER ONE THOUSAND)
In all those books, she BARELY learned anything related to Balthazar or her tarot
She did learn about hundreds of kindhearted, powerful, and generous wizards
This makes her think that she doesn’t really know what she’s doing — she asked everyone to give her their story. When she heard her own, “it fell flat”
She doesn’t think she has anything going for her, she’s not in any danger, she’s not- (Vallen stops her)
Vallen says that he thinks he can speak for all of us when he says he thinks we’d be dead without her
She can create black holes and destroy things with a thought
He asks her to think back to who she was three weeks ago, and think about who she is now. She might not understand her cards, but she’s learning. “It’s part of the journey, my dear”
Cordelia admits that she’s having a bit of a crisis of faith
Cordelia says that the look Camille gave her shook her to her very core — she realized that, to truly deal with the things that she needs to and save her family, friends, and deal with the war, she thinks that her old self needs to die
She says that she needs to deconstruct the person she was when she entered this town
Vallen responds by saying that she’s made friends because of who she is now, not because of who she’s going to be
Cordelia says that she wishes for her future self is someone else
Vallen says to hell with Mystra, Balthazar, Julian Devorak, and her mother. Just think about Cordelia, no-one else. He asks her what’s wrong with Cordelia
Cordelia doesn’t have anything to say in response
Vallen asks Cordelia if she knows about the story of Karsus
She knows he was someone who broke the laws of magic, angered Mystra, and died in a fallen city
Vallen says that Karsus was an arch-wizard, and that he believed he had all the answers. He defied Mystra and began using magic that no-one else had ever thought of. Everyone loved Karsus, except for Karsus.
Karsus saw himself for more than who he was, and kept pushing himself. When people relied on him with their lives, he kept pushing the bounds of what he knew until one day he broke through his limits, and learned more than gods about magic
HOWEVER!!! By pushing himself so far, he lost who he was and doomed thousands of people to die
He says that she needs to understand that we know Cordelia, and Cordelia does not want to become a Karsus
Vallen advises Cordelia to grow over time, rather than all at once
She asks him what the right path is then, and in response he says he doesn’t know — instead, she should tell him
He says that she’s defying gods as they speak, but she’s losing sight of what’s around her
Vallen tells her that all day, Cordelia’s friends were trying to get her out of her slump and trying to protect her, and despite all that she was trying to figure out how to be better
Cordelia comments on how she can tell something’s been troubling Vallen
He says there has been, but what he’s worrying about has no bearing on how he will live through today and tomorrow
Vallen requests that Cordelia comes back downstairs to drink with the rest of the party (she agrees)
Before arriving back to the group, Cordelia flags down Foo
She requests four little cakes from him 🥺🥺

Camille says that they’ll have one so long as she has one with them (Foo gives her an extra so everyone gets a little cake)
They also tell her that she’s one of their first and kindest friends
Kaya takes a cake, and says that Cordelia’s really good in battle
Cal IMMEDIATELY takes a cake once his name is mentioned
Cordelia says that she wasn’t entirely truthful to us when she told us her story
She says that she doesn’t know how to do “this”, but she will learn.
Kaya and Camille commiserate, saying that we don’t really know what we’re doing either
FRIENDSHIP HAPPENS!!!
Cordelia tells Cal that she learned a lot about gods during her readings, and her conclusion is that we should kill the gods

Winding down for the night
Camille goes to Foo, and asks him for the envelope that they gave to him earlier that week
He hands it back to them!!
They take the letter and write “Quén’s Will” on it
They hand the letter to Vallen!!
He says that he will open it if they die before him
Camille says that they hope neither of them die, and then go back on their word and say that they hope Vallen doesn’t die 😊
